A Dog’s Life in Haiku

Our family dog Bud–now departed–would often spend hours lying beside the pond where he would observe our resident frog, turtle, and goldfish. His eyes told me all I needed to know–that he was feeling the deep joy and love for all living things that we often feel, when we allow ourselves to leave our cars, work, and homes behind for the great outdoors. We miss him still. He died in the spring of 2005. Two of the three haiku captions are, of course, written from what I imagined would have been his inexpressible observations and feelings.

Beside the Pond

Two curious souls
Face each other, and wonder–
Is this mindfulness?

Goldfish–once timid–
Swim across the reflection
Of my smiling face.

Basking on a rock—
Turtle eyes my reflection
Then plays hide and seek.

So beautifully expressed, and so many memories held with our much loved four legged friend at the forefront, they are so missed.

  2. Aww, Peggy. You brought a tear to my eye. My husband and I are golden fans, and Bud is so beautiful. I can imaging that you miss him. Gorgeous photos and haiku. Yes, dogs have much to teach humans about mindfulness and love. ❤

I particularly love the Haiku Goldfish once timid, Swim across the reflection, Of my smiling face. Stunningly beautiful. I would think if you did a few more you could have a wonderful book – maybe call it Haiku By Dog (I originally thought Haiku by Bud but Haiku by Dog has a more…well…Haiku sound to it. Really. These haiku paired with the photos of your dog are really beautiful.

Peggy, these are lovely. I can’t believe it’s been that long since Bud was still with you. I guess his spirit is still a presence in your life. ❤

Thanks, Jean. Yes, he was definitely on my mind yesterday when I went for a walk in Shubie Park. That may only have been the second or third time that I’d gone there in years, and to see the wonderful changes that have been made along the walking paths reminded me of how much Bud loved the place–especially watching the squirrels and the ducks. On Thanksgiving Day, I was making a “gratitude list” of select photos to post on Facebook, and I had so many to choose from–in addition to the long prepared paragraph enumerating them–that I gave up on the idea! Perhaps I’ll post a few at a time over the next few months.
