My formative years were lived in Japan, and soon after graduating from university in Canada–my home country–my husband and I were accepted by the Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) for a posting to Guyana, South America. Note: Guyana has much stronger historical ties with the Anglophone Caribbean than it does with South America, which is why it is generally considered under that geographic umbrella. The Wikipedia article points out that there has been some controversy over whether Guyana should be designated a Caribbean country or a South American one. In any event, the republic has been a long-time member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from the organization’s founding in 1973, and in 2008, the country became a signatory to the Constitutive Treaty of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a document that was ratified in 2010, and which came into effect in 2011.
